Mont Roucous

StillLeast mineralisedNatural mineral water

Mont Roucous is sourced from springs in the Lacaune Mountains (Massif Central), within the Haut-Languedoc Regional Nature Park, at approximately 1,000 metres altitude in the Hérault department of southern France. The Roucous family is recorded as drawing water from the source since 1877. The commercial company was formally established in 1977; the brand was sold to Danone in 2000 and returned to independent ownership in 2007. Mont Roucous holds natural mineral water status.

Mineral character

Mont Roucous is one of the least mineralised waters in the TWD database, comparable in scale to Lauretana (TDS 14 mg/L) and Fastio (TDS ~54 mg/L). All six ions are at or near detection limits: calcium 1.2 mg/L, magnesium 0.2 mg/L, sodium 2.8 mg/L, sulphate 3.3 mg/L, chloride 3.2 mg/L, and bicarbonate 4.9 mg/L. Total hardness is 4 mg/L as CaCO₃; alkalinity is 4 mg/L as CaCO₃. TDS is approximately 15 mg/L. The water has virtually no buffering capacity and functions as a diluent in the same way as Lauretana.

Documented use and context

Mont Roucous is recommended for preparing infant formula by French paediatric authorities. Its very low sodium (2.8 mg/L) and near-zero mineral content make it one of the safest available bottled waters for this application under French infant nutrition guidelines. The brand has been marketed for maternal and infant use throughout its commercial history, and this recommendation is reflected in French retail placement and label messaging.
