Topo Chico
Topo Chico is sourced from a spring at the base of Cerro del Topo Chico, a hill north-west of Monterrey in Nuevo León, Mexico. The spring had been known locally for its mineral properties before commercial bottling began in 1895, when Vitaliano Paez built the first bottling plant at the site. In the 1920s, the first bottles of Coca-Cola produced in Mexico were bottled at a Topo Chico facility in Monterrey. The Coca-Cola Company acquired Topo Chico in 2017 for approximately $220 million. Topo Chico holds natural mineral water status.

Mineral character
Topo Chico is a hard, calcium-dominant sparkling water with notable sulphate. Calcium is 120 mg/L; sulphate is 180 mg/L; bicarbonate is 140 mg/L; sodium is 41 mg/L; chloride is 63 mg/L; magnesium is 11 mg/L. Total hardness is 345 mg/L as CaCO₃; alkalinity is 115 mg/L as CaCO₃. TDS is approximately 555 mg/L. The hardness-to-alkalinity ratio (345:115) reflects a sulphate-and-calcium driven profile in which permanent hardness substantially exceeds temporary hardness. The sulphate-to-chloride ratio of approximately 2.9:1 is moderately sulphate-weighted.
Documented use and context
Topo Chico is the traditional mineral water component of ranch water, a cocktail of Texas and northern Mexican origin made with tequila, fresh lime juice, and Topo Chico over ice. The drink is documented in Texas bar culture from at least the 1970s and is described on The Coca-Cola Company’s brand history pages as a defining use of Topo Chico. The bold carbonation of Topo Chico is cited in this context as a key characteristic. The Coca-Cola Company subsequently launched a “Topo Chico Hard Seltzer” range whose branding references the original water’s association with mixed drinks.
