Dasani

Purified + Minerals

StillCoca-Cola

Dasani is Coca-Cola’s purified-water brand, first launched in the United States in 1999. It is not a natural mineral or spring water: it is produced by reverse osmosis purification of municipal water supply, then remineralised with added minerals. Coca-Cola launched Dasani in the UK in February 2004. Within weeks, press reporting identified the source water as Sidcup tap water; the Food Standards Agency then found the product to contain bromate — a potentially carcinogenic compound — at levels above legal limits, caused by the ozonation step in the treatment process. Coca-Cola recalled approximately 500,000 bottles and withdrew Dasani from the UK market in March 2004. Plans to expand the brand into continental Europe were abandoned. Dasani remains available in the United States and a number of other markets.

Mineral character

The US Dasani profile is calcium 37.1 mg/L, magnesium 13.7 mg/L, sodium 4.4 mg/L, sulphate 8.2 mg/L, chloride 5.5 mg/L, and bicarbonate 184 mg/L. Hardness is 149 mg/L as CaCO₃. This profile reflects the remineralisation step rather than a geological source; the exact mineral addition varies by production facility.

Documented use and context

The 2004 UK withdrawal is the most extensively documented episode in Dasani’s history outside the US. The Food Standards Agency recall and subsequent press reporting (including CNN, 25 March 2004; Food Navigator, 22 March 2004) provide a detailed public record. The episode contributed to broader UK regulatory discussion about the labelling and classification of purified waters sold alongside natural mineral and spring waters.
